Obama Presidential Center
Dear Community Partners,
Today the Barack Obama Foundation announced that the South Side of Chicago has been selected as the location for the Obama Presidential Center, which will include the Obama Presidential Library. In the coming months, the Foundation will decide which of the two possible South Side sites will be home to the presidential center. Whichever location they choose, today’s decision creates major opportunities for the South Side and the City of Chicago.
This successful effort to win the presidential center would not have been possible without the active engagement of our neighboring communities. From the time the University of Chicago began making the case to locate the library on the South Side, numerous organizations, civic leaders, and elected officials contributed their ideas and support. We are especially grateful to Mayor Rahm Emanuel, whose leadership and actions have been absolutely essential in this project. Our Community Advisory Board provided important counsel and perspective, and institutions across the city identified opportunities for potential collaboration. Many of you also personally lent your time, expertise, and enthusiasm to the process. I thank you and congratulate you on this achievement.
We are deeply appreciative that President Obama, Mrs. Obama, and the Foundation chose the South Side as the location for the first truly urban presidential library, one that simultaneously will be strongly connected to the community and will offer programs of global impact.
Going forward, the University will support the Foundation and City’s efforts in community engagement, including planning, economic development, and individual and institutional collaborations. We look forward to working with the Foundation, the City, our neighbors, community partners, and civic leaders to realize the distinctive potential of the Obama Presidential Center.
We believe the opening of this presidential center will mark a watershed moment for the South Side and the City, serving as a catalyst for economic and cultural opportunities as well as community programming. We encourage you to continue to share your ideas with the Foundation as the next phase of this historic effort unfolds.
