Treasure Island Comes to Hyde Park

March 13, 2008

Locally owned grocer Treasure Island has opened a supermarket in the shopping center at 55th Street and Lake Park, in the space formerly occupied by the Hyde Park Co-op.

The new store offers traditional grocery items along with a range of specialty, organic and natural, and imported and domestic products. For example:

  • Market-fresh fruits and vegetables, freshly squeezed juices, and a bountiful salad bar
  • Full-service butcher and fish monger
  • Homemade prepared foods such as prime rib roast, rack of lamb, roasted chicken, lasagna, and grilled vegetables
  • Imported and domestic cheeses, olives, patés, and sliced meats
  • Freshly baked artisanal breads and pastries
  • An international selection of wines, beers, and spirits
  • Hard-to-find products from around the world such as extra virgin olive oils, balsamic and flavored vinegars, and fresh pastas
  • An extensive catering menu

Since the Hyde Park Co-op closed at the end of January, Treasure Island has offered online and phone shopping and delivery service to the Hyde Park community. The store also has taken over the Co-op’s shopping and delivery program to area shut-ins.

All current Hyde Park Co-op employees were invited to interview for employment. In addition, the University of Chicago has worked with Alderman Toni Preckwinkle to ensure that Co-op employees have access to city and state resources, support, information, and training.

Store hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. For more information, visit Treasure Island’s website.
