The University of Chicago and the University of Chicago Medical Center are by far the largest providers of jobs in Hyde Park, with more than 17,000 people employed by the university, 9,500 of them at the Medical Center. The two institutions recently teamed up to create a new program, the Career Pathways Initiative, that helps South Side residents find entry-level positions at the university and beyond.
Beyond the university, neighborhood employers include numerous small businesses—stores, services, and restaurants—as well as schools, churches, and cultural institutions such as the Museum of Science and Industry. In addition, Hyde Park has long attracted artists and writers to its vibrant community.
